Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. But there's also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive fire-fighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan's blood: her father is a legend in the field. She's been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home - even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air. Fortunately, this year's rookie crop is among the strongest ever - and Gulliver Curry's one of the best. He's also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kid's arcade. He came to Missoula to follow in the footsteps of Lucas "Iron Man" Tripp, yet he's instantly more fascinated by his hero's daughter. Rowan, as a rule, doesn't hook up with other smoke jumpers, but Gull is convinced he can change her mind. And damn if he doesn't make a good case to be an exception to the rule. This is another winner for Nora Roberts. I liked the plot well enough, loved the subplot, and loved the characters. It was fun watching the heroine having to deal with her own feelings on her dad's falling in love.I didn't give it the highest rating because the suspense parts of the plot were a bit too obvious, to the point where I'd guessed the true villian and the motive in chapter three and was able to predict who would be the next victim of his machinations. Unfortunately, this time I wasn't in the mood to read anything, so I struggled even with this book. As much as I enjoyed the story and the characters, this book didn't grab me as much as some other ones from Nora Roberts. And I'm not sure if the reason was my lack of enthusiasm about reading anything or maybe the story is not as good as some others. I believe the reason is

3.5 stars.Liked this one quite a bit. Loved the camaraderie NR created with the smoke jumpers. She did a great job of creating different personalities amongst all the characters complete with realistic quirks. Nice amount of everday humor. In contrast to her last few stand-alones, I actually liked this heroine as much as I liked the hero. Rowan was earthy, a little bawdy, knew her job, and was incredibly competent. I didn't feel disconnected from her like I have from some previous NR heroines.
