I took a long time to finally pull this book from my to-read pile. I was afraid Pamuk's essays would be too scholarly or didactic or that they weren't quite what I needed at the time. I was afraid of their sheer number of essays and that I would be reading something disjointed and trying. I was afraid they wouldn't live up to his fiction.What I found was an uncommonly generous spirit who brought his own thoughts to the table and opened up room for mine. Each of the short essays wove together

What does a note mean to a writer? I dont know the answer at first. The worse was that I could not discover the importance of making notes to a writer. I was so naive to think that the way a writer works was less complicated than a process engineer in a chemical factory: first, determine the existing chemical reactions and the overall process outflow; second, define the raw materials and products in order to calculate the material and energy balance; and, third, optimize the way utility system

The essays in Other Colors are what writers always look for when they open up a collection of essays: writings about writing. Other Colors is an inexpensive book filled with gold. Gold, I tell ya!

For eight often frustrating years, I thought my rating and review of this collection would be 3 stars at most and the comment: "I must simply prefer Pamuk's fiction." I struggled with this collection tremendously, more than once relegating it to a high shelf in the bookcase. When I finished the book this week, I gave some thought to what had made it so difficult for me to get through this collection.
